Edamame is naturally packed with protein and fiber, making it a nutritious alternative to traditional snacks and appetizers, such as chips. I already love them simply cooked in water, without any seasoning, but this Crispy Roasted Edamame recipe is absolutely delicious. The roasting process—whether in the oven or air fryer—enhances their nutty flavor and creates a satisfying crunchy exterior. I enjoy them on top of my salad or soup for a pleasant crispy touch, but they’re also perfect as a standalone snack.

Edamame’s roots lie in East Asia, especially China and Japan, where it is considered a staple ingredient in cuisine. In this regard, the Chinese regarded soybeans as one of the “Five Sacred Grains” alongside rice, wheat, barley, and millet. In Japan, the term edamame translates to “stem beans” because they were traditionally sold still attached to their stems. Moreover, Japanese cuisine commonly serves them boiled and salted as an appetizer alongside sake. Today, this legume is popular worldwide, as it is packed with protein and suitable for various dishes.

To keep the Crispy Roasted Edamame crunchy, I suggest storing them in an airtight container or resealable bag at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you plant to keep them fresh longer, place them in the fridge for up to 1 week and reheat them in the oven or air fryer for a few minutes. Alternatively, you can freeze them for up to 1 month.

Ingredients for crunchy edamame

ingredients for crunchy edamame
  • Edamame: they are a great source of protein and fiber, making this snack more filling. Once roasted, the inside stays tender while the outer skin crisps up. Edamame provides all nine essential amino acids, making it an ideal salad topper, soup garnish, or trail mix component for vegans and vegetarians. Finally, this ingredient is rich in unsaturated fats, which are good for heart health, while its fiber content promotes gut health.

  • Red chilli flakes: they add a spicy touch to the Crispy Roasted Edamame, enhancing its flavor. Chilli flakes release a warm, smoky aroma when roasted, balancing other seasonings such as salt. Moreover, this ingredient provides a vibrant red color that contrasts beautifully with the green edamame.

  • Olive oil: a drizzle ensures the edamame crisp up nicely, preventing them from burning. Moreover, olive oil acts as a binder, helping the seasonings adhere to the edamame. Rich in heart-healthy unsaturated fats, olive oil also helps maintain a bit of moisture inside the beans, keeping them tender.
